Labonnya Liza; DHAKA – The measles crisis in Bangladesh continues to worsen as 9 more children died of measles and measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours.
Out of these, three deaths were laboratory-confirmed measles cases, while six showed related symptoms. With these latest fatalities, the total death toll since March 15 has risen to 352.
According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) released this Saturday (May 9), the situation is becoming increasingly critical.
Key Statistics from the Report:
-
New Cases: 1,435 children were identified with measles or related symptoms in the last 24 hours.
-
Total Deaths (Mar 15 – May 9): 352 children have died in the past month and a half. This includes 61 confirmed measles deaths and 291 deaths with symptoms.
-
Total Infections: 6,989 cases have been laboratory-confirmed, while 47,656 children have received hospital treatment for measles-like symptoms.
Regional Impact:
Dhaka Division remains the highest-risk zone, accounting for 173 of the total deaths. The number of infected children in this division has reached 26,080.
Health experts suggest that gaps in routine immunization and the rapid spread of the virus due to the intense summer heat are major factors behind this surge.
The DGHS has urged parents to seek immediate medical attention if a child develops a fever or rash, emphasizing heightened vigilance in the Dhaka metropolitan area.
