Health Desk — The relentless surge of measles shows no signs of slowing down in Bangladesh, with five more children succumbing to measles symptoms within the last 24 hours.

The alarming updates were published today, Thursday, in the regular measles situation report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

According to health officials, the latest casualties occurred between 8:00 AM on Wednesday and 8:00 AM today.

This brings the total collective death toll to 724 since the outbreak intensified on March 15. Out of these fatalities, 93 deaths have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while 631 children died presenting severe measles symptoms.

Rising Infections and Overwhelmed Hospitals

Hospitals across the country continue to see a steady influx of young patients showing hallmark symptoms of the highly contagious viral disease.

The DGHS report highlighted that 965 new children exhibited measles symptoms nationwide over the last 24 hours alone.

This pushes the total number of suspected measles patients recorded since March 15 to a staggering 102,993. Furthermore, 154 new cases were officially confirmed through laboratory testing in the past 24 hours, driving the country’s total number of confirmed measles infections to 12,286.

The pressure on the country’s healthcare infrastructure remains severe. Since mid-March, a total of 86,411 children have required hospitalization due to measles-related complications.

On a positive note, recovery rates remain high, with 82,759 children successfully treated and discharged from various medical facilities so far.

Regional Impact and Current Status

While no new deaths were recorded among laboratory-confirmed cases in the last 24 hours, the five symptomatic deaths underscore the ongoing virulence of the disease.

Geographically, the capital division bore the brunt of the latest fatalities:

  • Dhaka Division: Reported 3 deaths.

  • Sylhet Division: Reported 1 death.

  • Barisal Division: Reported 1 death.

As the caseload officially crosses the grim milestone of 100,000 suspected infections, health authorities face an uphill battle in containing transmission. With hundreds of new symptomatic children filling hospital wards daily, the focus remains heavily on expanding isolation spaces, managing clinical complications, and strengthening immunization drives to halt the spread of this preventable tragedy.
