Special Correspondent: The Ministry of Law has expressed its opinion that Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson Khaleda Zia cannot be sent abroad for medical treatment.
This decision comes after a request from the family of the former Prime Minister for consideration from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The Minister for Law, Justice, and Parliament Affairs, Anisul Haque, informed journalists about this on Sunday.
In response to questions from reporters at the Secretariat on Sunday (October 1), the minister stated, “The most recent request from Khaleda Zia’s brother was for her permanent release and permission to send her abroad for medical treatment.
For a legal opinion on this matter, it was sent to us. The legal opinion was sent to the Ministry of Home Affairs a while ago.”
Anisul Haque explained, “This falls under the purview of Section 401(1) of the Code of Criminal Procedure. There were two conditions mentioned there.
Those two conditions were that she would receive treatment at home and she would not be allowed to go abroad.”
The minister further stated, “By complying with those conditions, she was released from prison and returned home. In this way, the application was disposed of.
Only one thing remained unresolved, which was whether her six-month leave could be extended or not. That matter has been extended eight times.”
Minister Anisul Haque also mentioned, “Under Section 401 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, there is no provision in the law for reconsidering an application once it has been disposed of.”
