Neymar or Vinicius Jr? Real Madrid star settles the debate over Brazil’s iconic No. 10 jersey

Online Desk – In Brazilian national football, the “No. 10″ jersey is far more than just a number—it is a symbol of immense heritage, responsibility, and ultimate prestige.

Legends like Pelé, Zico, and Ronaldinho have carved out history wearing this shirt. For over a decade, this emblem of footballing excellence has belonged to Neymar Jr.

Neymar has long been the designated owner of Brazil’s No. 10 shirt. However, after suffering a severe knee injury during a match against Uruguay in October 2023, he was sidelined from international duties for an extended period.

In his absence, the heavy responsibility of the No. 10 shirt was briefly passed around, occasionally worn by Raphinha and Real Madrid’s explosive winger, Vinicius Junior.

With Neymar now fit and officially named in Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, a heated debate erupted among fans and media regarding who would wear the legendary jersey.

Rumors heavily circulated across social media suggesting that Vinicius Jr. would take over the historic number, while Neymar would be reassigned to the No. 13 shirt.

However, Vinicius Jr. himself has quickly stepped forward to dismiss the speculation.

The Real Madrid winger clarified his stance, stating that the number 10 shirt is nothing extraordinary to him and that it rightfully belongs to Neymar. In a candid interview with the Brazilian YouTube channel CazéTV, Vinicius Jr. stated:

“I still don’t know what my jersey number will be for the World Cup, but the No. 10 jersey belongs to Neymar. That much is clear.”

Vinicius Jr. previously assumed the No. 10 mantle at various intervals since the 2022–23 season, stepping up as a key leader on the pitch while Neymar recovered from his long-term ACL injury.

With Neymar expected to reclaim his hierarchy and wear his signature No. 10 at the World Cup, Vinicius Jr. is highly anticipated to return to his traditional and familiar No. 7 jersey—a number he already dons with immense success for Real Madrid.
