Sports Desk; LEICESTER – Leicester City, the club featuring British-Bangladeshi midfielder Hamza Choudhury, has failed in its bid to overturn a six-point penalty. An independent appeal board has upheld the original decision to dock points for breaching financial sustainability rules, leaving the club in a precarious position.
The English Football League (EFL) and the Premier League confirmed yesterday that the recommendation of an independent commission will stand. In an official statement, the Premier League noted:
“An independent commission recommended a six-point deduction for Leicester City this season. An independent appeal board has now upheld that decision.”
The Root of the Sanctions
The charges stem from a breach of Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) during the three-year period ending in the 2023-24 season, while the club was still in the Championship. The Premier League filed the case last May, leading to the initial six-point deduction on February 5.
Leicester City appealed the ruling on several grounds, questioning the commission’s authority to impose such a penalty and arguing against the severity of the punishment. However, the appeal board dismissed all objections.
Financial Breakdown
According to the independent commission, Leicester exceeded the allowed loss threshold by £20.8 million (approximately BDT 344.71 crore). Under PSR guidelines:
-
Premier League clubs are permitted a maximum loss of £105 million over three years.
-
This limit drops by £22 million for every season spent outside the top flight.
-
By June 30, 2024, Leicester’s audited losses had reached a level that triggered the disciplinary action.
Current Standings and Reaction
With the appeal settled, the club is now focusing solely on avoiding relegation. A Leicester City spokesperson stated, “The matter is now closed. With five matches remaining this season, our focus is entirely on on-field performance.”
The penalty has hit the team hard. In the current 2025-26 Championship season, Leicester has secured 11 wins and 14 draws across 41 matches. While their on-field performance earned them 47 points, the 6-point deduction leaves them with just 41 points. Hamza’s side currently sits at 22nd place in the 24-team table, deep in the relegation zone.
