ONLINE DESK — Global energy markets are in turmoil as oil prices skyrocketed following a fresh announcement from U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a naval blockade of Iranian ports. The price surge was immediate as trading opened on Monday.

Market Reaction

Brent crude, the international benchmark for oil, surged by 7%, currently trading at $102.29 per barrel. Simultaneously, the U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude saw an even sharper increase of 8%, reaching $104.24 per barrel.

The current spike marks a significant departure from pre-war prices. Before the conflict with Iran began on February 28, oil was trading at approximately $70 per barrel. Since the onset of hostilities, prices have fluctuated wildly, at one point crossing the $119 mark.

Trump’s Ultimatum on Hormuz

The escalation follows failed U.S.-Iran talks recently held in Pakistan. President Trump took to his social media platform, Truth Social, on Sunday to issue a stern warning regarding the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump stated that while a treaty for free navigation through the Strait is possible, it is currently being blocked by Iranian interference. He announced that the U.S. Navy would immediately begin intercepting all vessels attempting to enter or exit the Strait of Hormuz that pay “illegal tolls” to Iran.

“Very soon, this blockade will begin,” Trump posted, warning that any vessel paying these tolls would not have safe passage. He further cautioned that any Iranian attack on U.S. or international shipping would be met with a “severe response.”

Economic Context

Last Friday, oil prices had briefly dipped to $95.20 per barrel amid hopes that the diplomatic meetings in Pakistan would yield a de-escalation. However, the breakdown of those talks and the subsequent blockade announcement have effectively erased those gains, pushing energy costs back into the triple digits.
