Over 32 Crore Registered SIMs in Bangladesh: Telecom Minister Reveals Historic Milestone in Parliament

Special Correspondent from Bangladesh Parliament –– The number of valid, registered mobile SIM cards across Bangladesh’s four active operators has reached a staggering 32.82 crore—nearly double the country’s total population.

The Post, Telecommunications, and Information Technology Minister, Fakir Mahbub Anam, disclosed this milestone during a question-and-answer session in the National Parliament yesterday.

Responding to a query from Nilufar Chowdhury Moni, a Member of Parliament from the reserved women’s seat, the Minister confirmed that four major mobile phone operators are currently driving the nation’s connectivity. These operators are:

  • Teletalk Bangladesh Limited

  • Grameenphone Limited

  • Robi Axiata PLC

  • Banglalink Digital Communications Limited

Global Tech Training for 1,000 Youths

Looking toward the future, Minister Fakir Mahbub Anam announced an ambitious roadmap to tackle the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR). Over the next five years, the government plans to provide international-standard ICT training to 1,000 Bangladeshi youths.

“This elite tech training initiative will directly open doors for our youth, creating high-value ICT job opportunities across 13 countries globally,” the Minister stated.

Smart Post Boxes & Automated Postal Services

The Minister also shared major modernization plans for the Bangladesh Post Office, aiming to make it more customer-friendly and competitive in the digital age.

As part of the initial phase, 24-hour “Smart Post Boxes” will be installed in Dhaka to offer around-the-clock service to citizens. Furthermore, the government has launched a structured initiative to bring the entire country’s postal operations under a step-by-step automation system, phasing out traditional, manual workflows.
