Desk Report — The Press Information Department (PID) has issued a stern warning to all registered media outlets in Bangladesh, cautioning them against the growing trend of publishing unverified and misleading news reports.
In a special press release, the department highlighted that an increasing reliance on social media and other unreliable sources is causing mainstream media organizations to inadvertently spread misinformation and distorted content.
The Rise of AI-Generated Fake Media and Misinformation
According to the official PID notice, several media houses have recently been found distributing false information, deep-seated misinformation, and artificial intelligence (AI)-generated manipulated images alongside highly misleading content.
The government body observed that these fabrications are severely confusing the public and disrupting social harmony.
The PID noted that utilizing unvouched digital platforms as primary news sources has accelerated the contamination of mainstream journalism, leading traditional outlets to inherit the exact biases and inaccuracies found online.
The department underscored that such practices directly contradict the fundamental principles of objective and ethical journalism.
A Call for Rigorous Fact-Checking
In light of these emerging challenges, the authorities have mandated a stricter approach to editorial oversight before any story goes to print or broadcast. The PID stated:
“Verifying the authenticity of information, ensuring professional responsibility, and conducting meticulous fact-checking have become mandatory obligations for the media before publishing any news.”
The government has also requested all mass media operations to strictly adhere to the established rules and legal guidelines outlined in their official media registration policies.
As the digital landscape evolves, the line between authentic reportage and fabricated digital content continues to blur.
The PID’s latest directive emphasizes that the responsibility to maintain public trust rests heavily on newsrooms.
Mainstream outlets must elevate their verification standards and reject unverified social media narratives to preserve the integrity of the nation’s press.
