Teknaf Correspondent— Heavy bombardment and air raids launched by the Myanmar military junta in neighboring Rakhine State have triggered panic along the Bangladesh border.
The intense shelling and aerial strikes, targeting territories currently controlled by the rebel Arakan Army, caused homes across the Teknaf border region in Cox’s Bazar to vibrate violently throughout Wednesday.
Security forces on the Bangladesh side have been placed on high alert following the sudden escalation of the conflict across the border.
Terrified Residents Report Earthquake-Like Tremors
The cross-border impact of the conflict was intensely felt on Wednesday (July 1) as the Myanmar military targeted areas in and around the strategic town of Maungdaw in Rakhine State. The resulting explosions sent booming soundwaves stretching miles across the River Naf, shaking communities in Teknaf, Sabrang, and Shah Porir Dwip.
Local residents reported feeling severe vibrations resembling tectonic activity.
“On Wednesday, houses along the Shah Porir Dwip border were shaking like an earthquake,” said Mohammad Sana Ullah, a local resident. “The explosions were so loud that it was terrifying even to stay indoors. We heard that the Myanmar military has launched fresh airstrikes in the Maungdaw town area of Rakhine State.”
Another resident from Teknaf Sadar, Chhied Alam, added that the late-night blasts were particularly disturbing. “The explosions that occurred in Maungdaw after 9:00 PM on Wednesday shook our homes violently. The children inside were terrified by the deafening noise.”
Border Security Heightened Amid Resumed Hostilities
Abdul Mannan, the Acting Chairman of the Sabrang Union Parishad, confirmed that while the intermittent explosions disrupted life throughout Wednesday day and night, the border areas returned to a tense calm on Thursday morning with no further blast sounds reported.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Hanifur Rahman Bhuiyan, Commander of the Teknaf Battalion (2 BGB), the primary military clashes in Rakhine State occurred approximately 18 kilometers away from the Shah Porir Dwip border line.
In response to the proximity of the conflict, local administration officials reassured the public that defensive protocols are fully operational.
“Intermittent airstrikes occurred in the town of Maungdaw in Myanmar throughout Wednesday morning and night,” stated Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) S. M. Aneek Chowdhury. “In light of this situation, BGB and Coast Guard personnel remain on high alert along the Teknaf border.”
The latest round of hostilities marks a significant escalation after a prolonged period of relative calm along the frontier.
The geopolitical friction in Rakhine State previously spilled over to affect the Ukhia and Teknaf border corridors in December of last year during major confrontations between the Arakan Army and the junta forces.
The recent airstrikes indicate a desperate attempt by the military regime to reclaim strategic territory lost to the ethnic rebel group over the past several months.
As the Myanmar internal crisis deepens, the structural and psychological impacts on Bangladeshi border communities remain a pressing concern.
While local authorities have successfully managed border security and prevented any direct incursions, the continuous threat of cross-border shockwaves keeps the residents of Teknaf on edge, highlighting the volatile nature of the neighboring civil war.
