Road Accident : 39,522 people lost their lives on the roads in five years

Khairul alam : In the past five years, 39 thousand 522 people were killed and 58 thousand 791 injured in 28 thousand 299 accidents on the country’s roads and highways. Among them, 3 thousand 941 students were infected.

This information came from Bangladeshi Jatri Kalyan Samiti in a statement sent to the media on the occasion of the 5th anniversary of the Young Student Movement to Demand Safe Roads on Friday (July 28).

Secretary General of the Association said that the Awami League government promised safe roads in its election manifesto after the largest movement of young students in the country’s history on July 29, 2018, but failed to implement it.

He said that all of the Safe Way activists’ demands are reasonable. Although the government accepted the demands, none have been implemented in the past five years. As a result, many new lives are thrown onto the road every day.

Thousands of working hours are lost due to road chaos. In the wake of the government plan, rickety vehicles and small vehicles are increasing uncontrollably, especially motorcycles, easy bikes, battery powered rickshaws and auto rickshaws.

Besides, although the death toll in traffic jams and road accidents is on the rise, the government is joking with the people by claiming that road accidents and deaths are decreasing by providing various false and misleading information.

He also said that the new Land Transport Law 2018 was passed in haste due to the demands of the students, but due to the various obstacles of transport owners and labor leaders and the implementation of this law in the old way, the desired results are not getting in this sector.

The Safe Roads for Young Learners movement has opened the eyes of our policy makers. Little by little they fell asleep again. As a result, chaos, anarchy, rent chaos, and harassment of commuters on the roads increased.

Lacking proper leadership and research, the government has repeatedly failed to establish road safety and order on the roads, claiming that all false cases filed in the name of students urging safe roads should be withdrawn immediately.
