Sheikh Hasina Assures Nation Amidst Rising Food Prices During Ramadan

Khairul Alam: Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has acknowledged the hardships faced by ordinary citizens, particularly those with limited incomes, amidst a recent increase in the prices of essential commodities.

In a televised address marking the country’s 54th Independence Day on Monday evening, she emphasized the government’s relentless efforts to alleviate people’s suffering.

“At this year’s onset of Ramadan, the prices of items such as dates, imported fruits, including lemons and watermelons, and onions had experienced a slight surge.

However, within a few days, these prices have stabilized to more manageable levels,” stated Prime Minister Hasina.

She highlighted proactive measures taken by the government to ensure sufficient stockpiles of essential items, including sugar, lentils, and edible oil, well before the beginning of Ramadan. Additionally, Bangladesh has secured permissions for the import of 50,000 metric tons of onions and a significant quantity of potatoes from India to meet the increased demand.

To ease the burden on local communities during Ramadan, the Prime Minister announced the sale of fish, meat, eggs, and milk at affordable prices in at least 25 locations across the capital.

Furthermore, Prime Minister Hasina underscored the government’s commitment to providing relief to vulnerable populations through various initiatives, including the distribution of essential commodities. She emphasized that this year, the government discouraged both official and party-led iftar parties.

Reflecting on Bangladesh’s progress, Prime Minister Hasina expressed optimism about the nation’s future. “Bangladesh has transitioned from a least developed country to a developing one, fulfilling all conditions necessary for the elevation,” she declared, expressing hope that by 2026, Bangladesh would be a permanent member of the developed nations’ club.

She highlighted significant infrastructure projects such as the Padma Bridge, Dhaka Metro Rail, Elevated Expressway, Karnaphuli Tunnel, and the third terminal at Shahjalal International Airport, which have transformed connectivity across the country. Additionally, widespread electrification has reached every corner of the nation.

In a poignant moment, the Prime Minister reminisced about the sacrifices made by Awami League leaders and workers since the restoration of democracy in 1991.

She vowed that the Awami League would never forget the bloodshed and sacrifices made for the restoration of democracy and the establishment of voting rights.

“Bangladesh Awami League will never deviate from the path of democracy, even if it means risking my life,” declared Prime Minister Hasina, underlining the party’s commitment to upholding constitutional principles.
