Sports Reporter From Harare — Bangladesh clinical performance in the third and final One Day International (ODI) saved them from a humiliating series whitewash against Zimbabwe, cruising to a commanding 7-wicket victory at the Harare Sports Club on Saturday.
After shocking collapses in the opening two encounters—including a dismal failure to defend a target in the first match—the Tigers bounced back dramatically.
A fierce four-wicket haul by left-arm speedster Shoriful Islam dismantled the hosts’ batting line-up, followed by a masterful 94-run knock from opening batsman Tanzid Hasan Tamim that made a mockery of Zimbabwe’s 200-run target.
Shoriful Spearheads Bowling Recovery
Having lost the toss and being sent out to bowl, the under-pressure Bangladeshi side found immediate inspiration through Shoriful Islam. The left-arm pacer rattled the Zimbabwean top order early, leaving the hosts reeling at a precarious 27 for 3.
Though Zimbabwe attempted to steady the ship with a brief fourth-wicket partnership, Shoriful struck again in quick succession, triggering a collapse that left the home side struggling at 108 for 6.
Facing a total batting capitulation, Zimbabwe found saviors in Wessly Madhevere and Brad Evans. Madhevere struck a resilient 75 off 74 balls, while Evans contributed a crucial, quick-fire 50 off 43 deliveries.
Their lower-order resistance dragged Zimbabwe to a competitive total, putting up a fighting fund after the initial collapse.
Shoriful finished his spectacular 10-over spell with figures of 4 for 44. He was ably supported by Taskin Ahmed and left-arm spinner Tanvir Islam, both of whom claimed two wickets apiece to keep the pressure mounted on the hosts.
Tanzid and Soumya Blueprint the Chase
Unlike the first two ODIs where Bangladesh struggled to find stability at the top, the opening duo of Tanzid Hasan Tamim and Soumya Sarkar decisively swung the game’s momentum in the visitors’ favor.
The pair put together a spectacular 151-run opening stand, successfully dampening Zimbabwe’s bowling threat.
Soumya laid the foundation with a well-constructed 69 off 82 balls, decorated with six boundaries and two sixes, before his departure.
With Bangladesh closing in on the target, drama unfolded as Tanzid Tamim neared his maiden ODI century.
Needing just 6 runs for his milestone—coincidentally the same margin the team needed for victory—Tanzid mistimed a shot and was caught out on 94 off 101 balls. His brilliant innings included eight boundaries and three maximums.
Though Towhid Hridoy fell for a duck immediately after, skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto stayed calm with a brief 18-run cameo, comfortably guiding the Tigers past the finish line with 14 overs to spare.
While Zimbabwe walks away with the ODI series trophy courtesy of their triumphs in the first two matches, Bangladesh will take immense relief from this comprehensive final-game turnaround.
The clinical display from both the pace unit and the top-order batsmen answers some crucial selection questions, offering the team vital momentum to rebuild their limited-overs strategy going forward.
