Slow Over-Rate: Bangladesh Players Fined in Second ODI Against New Zealand

Khairul Alam from Mirpur Stadium- The Bangladesh national cricket team has been fined 10% of their match fee for maintaining a slow over-rate during the second ODI against New Zealand at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur.

The match, held on Monday, saw the Kiwi innings drag on well past the scheduled finish time. While the 50-over innings was supposed to conclude by 2:30 PM, it ended at 3:15 PM—nearly 45 minutes late—despite New Zealand being bowled out in 48.4 overs.

According to an ICC media release, the team led by stand-in captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz was found to be two overs short of the target after all time allowances were taken into consideration.

Reasons for the Delay

Extreme heat played a major role in the slow progress. Frequent drinks breaks, minor on-field injuries, and a heavy reliance on pace bowlers contributed to the delay.

However, ICC Match Referee Andy Pycroft ruled that these factors did not fully justify the 45-minute lag.

The Penalty

The charge was leveled by on-field umpires Richard Illingworth and Gazi Sohel, third umpire Nitin Menon, and fourth umpire Masudur Rahman Mukul. Captain Miraz pleaded guilty to the offense, accepting the 10% match fee fine as per Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct. Consequently, no formal hearing was required.
