Political Report : The court sentenced Tareq Rahman, acting president of BNP to 9 years in prison for concealing assets and amassing assets disproportionate to known income. Whereas Tarek’s wife Dr. Zobayda Rahman was sentenced to three years imprisonment.
On Wednesday (August 2) the Judge of the Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Court. Asaduzzaman announced the verdict.
The court ordered Tareq Rahman to be imprisoned for three years under Section 26(2) and six years under Section 27(1) of the ACC Act. The judge said in the judgment that both the sentences would run concurrently.
As per Section 27(1) of the ACC Act, the court ordered three years imprisonment for Zobeida Rahman.
Apart from the jail sentence, the court has also imposed a fine of Rs 3 crore on Tareq Rahman. In default of payment of the fine, he will have to undergo further imprisonment for three months.
On the other hand, Zobayda Rehman has been slapped with a fine of Taka 3.5 million, failing which she will have to serve one more month in prison.
Along with this, the court has ordered confiscation of 2 crore 74 lakh 93 thousand 87 taka in favor of the state as undisclosed property of Tarek-Jobayda couple.
In Earlier BNP leadre Tareq also sentenced to different terms of imprisonment in four cases. Several other cases are also pending against him. However, pro-BNP lawyers said this was Jobayder’s first and only verdict.
