Senior Correspondent: In a tax evasion case filed by the National Board of Revenue (NBR), BNP’s Acting Chairman Tarek Rahman has been acquitted by the court.
The ruling was delivered by Judge Rezaul Karim of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-10 on Wednesday.
According to court sources, today’s hearing was scheduled for framing charges in the case.
However, the judge noted that the allegations brought by the plaintiff were baseless and fabricated. Consequently, Tarek Rahman was acquitted from the case.
The case dates back to July 28, 2008, when Samia Akhtar, the Deputy Commissioner of Tax (Dhaka Tax Zone-6), filed a lawsuit, accusing Tarek Rahman of earning over Tk 1.47 crore from various sources between 2002 and 2006. The case alleged that Rahman had evaded tax payments amounting to Tk 26.86 lakh.
