The Great Victory Month Begins

Khairul Alam: The great Victory Month, December, has begun. This victory was achieved at the cost of 3 million martyrs and the dignity of 200,000 mothers and sisters.

The greatest event in Bangladesh’s long political history is the Liberation War of 1971.

Through an historic armed struggle for independence, the Bengali nation fulfilled its social, political, and economic dreams in this month.

The ultimate and unforgettable victory of the Liberation War, the greatest achievement of the Bengali nation, was secured on December 16.

On this day, the Bengalis earned their identity as an independent nation in the world. They gained their own territory and a national flag adorned with a red sun on a field of green.

The nationalism based on language was completed on this day through the declaration of independence, achieved after a bloody war.

While December marks the fulfillment of the Bengali nation’s long-standing dream, it is also a month of profound sorrow, as it came at the cost of countless young lives and the violation of women’s dignity.

In this month, the Pakistani military, with the help of their local collaborators, the Razakars, Al-Badr, and Al-Shams, carried out a brutal massacre of the country’s intellectuals and the brightest minds.

There is no second instance of such a despicable attempt to render a nation devoid of intellect in world history.

From the beginning of December 1971, news of the defeats of the brutal Pakistani forces started coming in as the freedom fighters launched guerrilla attacks.

On December 16, the Pakistani forces were forced to surrender at the historic Racecourse Ground in Dhaka (now Suhrawardy Udyan), marking the ultimate victory of the nine-month-long blood-soaked Liberation War.

The nation achieved the independence of its dreams, lasting for over a thousand years.
