SUNAMGANJ Correspondent; Dbarta24 — In a tragic turn of events, local authorities and divers have recovered the bodies of all four villagers who went missing after a boat capsized in Maiyar Haor under Jagannathpur Upazila of Sunamganj district.
The tragic recovery operation concluded on Sunday afternoon when local residents spotted the floating remains of the final two missing individuals—Hemendra Devnath (37), son of the late Jogindra Devnath, and Adhir Devnath (35), son of the late Anil Devnath, both hailing from the East Bhavanipur area of Jagannathpur municipality. Police subsequently retrieved the bodies from the Rowarkara section of Maiyar Haor.
This comes following an intensive search operation on Saturday, during which divers retrieved the bodies of the first two victims: Satyendra Nath Sati (65), son of the late Subal Devnath, and Arun Devnath (45), another son of the late Anil Devnath.
Midnight Voyage Turns Fatal
According to local authorities and emergency personnel, the incident occurred during the early hours of Friday. A group of ten villagers from East Bhavanipur was returning home by boat around 3:00 AM after attending a Kirtan (a religious gathering).
As the boat navigated through the Baluchar area of Maiyar Haor, it suddenly lost balance and submerged. While six passengers managed to swim safely to the shore despite the dark, four were dragged under by strong currents and remained missing.
Official Statement and Handover
Following the retrieval operations on Saturday and Sunday, local law enforcement met with the grieving families of the deceased.
Jagannathpur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shafiqul Islam confirmed the tragic developments, stating: “As the families of the deceased have no complaints regarding the incident, the bodies were handed over to their relatives without an autopsy.”
The sudden demise of four community members has sent shockwaves through the East Bhavanipur neighborhood, casting a heavy pall of gloom over the entire municipality. Local administration and police have urged small watercraft operators to exercise extreme caution while navigating the expansive haor regions at night.
