National Report: A statement from the US Embassy in Bangladesh commented that it is not safe for the Rohingyas who have taken refuge in Bangladesh to return to their country now.
“Therefore, we (the United States) are contributing to a comprehensive solution to the plight of the Rohingya by sharing responsibility through resettlement,” it said.
Noting that since 2009, the United States has welcomed nearly 13,000 Rohingya from the region, including Bangladesh, the statement said, “We applaud the generosity of other countries that have contributed to the international resettlement process.”
Hopefully, the international community will join this important effort beyond countries that have traditionally offered resettlement.
The statement was issued by the embassy on Friday (August 25) to mark the six-year anniversary of the “genocide” against the Rohingya.
It says that the “genocide” carried out by the rulers in Myanmar forced 750,000 Rohingya’s to flee the country with few things they could carry.
The people of Bangladesh welcomed them with compassion and humanity. The people of Bangladesh have continued to provide hospitality to nearly 1 million refugees. We (the United States) appreciate this generosity.’
