8 More Children Die with Measles Symptoms in Bangladesh; Death Toll Reaches 583

Dhaka Bureau: The measles situation in Bangladesh has reached an alarming level, with 8 more children dying of measles-like symptoms in the last 24 hours. During the same period, 1,086 new cases of measles and suspected measles symptoms have been reported across the country.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed these statistics in its latest measles update released on Saturday (May 30, 2026).

According to the DGHS report, while 8 children passed away with measles symptoms in the past 24 hours, no deaths were officially confirmed as lab-tested measles during this specific period.

With the latest fatalities, the total number of deaths from measles symptoms has risen to 493 since March 15. Additionally, 90 children have been confirmed to have died directly from measles. In total, the death toll from confirmed measles and related symptoms has climbed to 583.

The health directorate further informed that 53 new cases of confirmed measles were detected in the last 24 hours, while 1,033 patients were identified with measles-like symptoms. During this time frame, 907 children were admitted to various hospitals, and 539 were discharged after recovery.

Since March 15, the total number of suspected measles cases in the country has surged to 69,612. Out of these, 8,996 cases have been laboratory-confirmed as measles. So far, 55,705 patients have required hospitalization, with 52,050 recovering and returning home.

Health experts emphasize that reinforcing the child vaccination program is critical to curbing the spread of measles. They have urged authorities to ensure immediate medical intervention for infected children and advised the health department to implement more rigorous measures to control the outbreak.
