Police Clarify: Model Meghna Alam in Protective Custody, Not Abducted

Desk Report: The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has stated that allegations of model Meghna Alam’s abduction are incorrect.

They clarified that she was taken into protective custody due to allegations of jeopardizing state security, spreading false information about important individuals to damage international relations, and conspiring to economically harm the country.

In a statement released to the media on Friday, the DMP said, “Meghna Alam has been taken into protective custody following all legal procedures. The allegation of her abduction is false. She has the right to seek legal recourse.”

On Wednesday evening, during a Facebook live session, Meghna Alam alleged that individuals claiming to be police officers “broke down her apartment door” and entered. The live stream was abruptly cut off and subsequently deleted.

After her detention from her residence in the Bashundhara Residential Area of Dhaka, a court ordered her to be detained in jail for 30 days under the Detention Act.

This act allows the government to detain or imprison an individual for a specific period without formal court proceedings, typically in the interest of public safety, state security, and maintaining law and order.

Court sources revealed that the Detective Branch (DB) police presented Meghna Alam to the court at approximately 10:30 PM. Following the DB police’s request, the court ordered her to be sent to jail.

According to the court order, this action was taken under Section 2(F) of the Special Powers Act of 1974 to prevent activities detrimental to public safety and law and order.

Under the authority granted by Section 3(1) of the same act, she was ordered to be detained in Dhaka Central Jail for 30 days from the date of the detention order, with approval from the authorities. She was later transferred to Kashimpur Jail.

An officer from Bhatara Police Station, speaking anonymously, stated that law enforcement personnel went to the Bashundhara area on Wednesday to detain Meghna Alam. Initially, she refused to open the door. She was then detained and taken to Minto Road.

Meghna Alam, a model and chairperson of Miss Bangladesh Foundation, won the Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020 competition on October 5, 2020.
