Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong marries long-time partner

Desk Report: Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong has tied the knot with her long-time partner, Sophie Allouache. She is the first openly gay female member of parliament in the country.

The wedding ceremony was confirmed by Wong herself, who shared photos of their wedding on social media platform Instagram. In the pictures, Wong and Allouache can be seen holding hands with a flower bouquet.

Wong captioned the post saying, “Many of our family and friends have shared this special day with us, and we are delighted.”

Wong and Sophie Allouache have been together for nearly two decades and celebrated their marriage on Saturday in a winery in Adelaide, the capital of South Australia, where Wong represents the state in the Senate.

Wong has served as a senator for the Labor Party since 2002 and is the first Asian-born person and the first openly gay woman to serve in Australia’s parliament.

It’s worth noting that same-sex marriage was legalized in Australia in 2017.
