Staff Correspondent, Dhaka- The long-standing speculation regarding the next head coach of the Bangladesh National Football Team is nearing its conclusion.
The Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) scrutiny committee has finalized a preliminary shortlist from nearly 300 applicants.
The four-member special committee has trimmed the massive list down to 20 candidates, which notably includes tactical experts from footballing giants Brazil and Argentina.
While Bangladesh has not hired a head coach from Latin America in over a decade, their inclusion marks a potential shift in strategy.
Strict Criteria: Pro-License is Non-Negotiable
Speaking at the BFF House, committee member Iqbal Hossain emphasized that the federation is not compromising on quality.
“We have prioritized the Pro-License above all else. Applicants without this qualification were eliminated immediately,” Hossain stated. “We also prepared a separate list of 14 candidates for the Goalkeeping Coach position.”
Key Factors in Selection
The federation is looking for a specific profile to lead the team, which includes stars like Hamza Choudhury and Shekh Morsalin. The selection criteria focus on:
-
Asian Experience: A proven track record of coaching within the Asian football circuit.
-
Tactical Depth: Current employment status and technical prowess were heavily weighed.
-
Age Bracket: While most candidates fall between 40 and 60, a 65-year-old veteran is also under consideration due to extensive experience.
Budget and Future Challenges
BFF President Tabith Awal has acknowledged that budget remains a significant factor, but the federation is prepared to invest for the right candidate. “To bring in a top-tier coach, we must be ready to spend,” Hossain added.
The National Team Committee will officially review the list today. The goal is to select 3–4 finalists for direct negotiations.
The new coach will face an immediate baptism by fire: a historic friendly against San Marino on June 5, marking Bangladesh’s first-ever match against a European opponent on European soil.
