BSEC Urges Legal Measures Against Spread of False Information Regarding Share Prices on Social Media

Khairul Alam: The Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) has stated that legal action will be taken if false information or rumors regarding share prices are spread on online platforms, including social media.

In a statement released to the media on Sunday (March 17), the BSEC highlighted concerns over the dissemination of baseless rumors and false information related to the stock market on social media platforms, which are often inaccurate.

The statement noted that the publication of unsubstantiated information or rumors, including predictions or forecasts about stock market-related matters, on social media and cyberspace constitutes a punishable offense under the Cyber Security Act of 2023.

Therefore, stakeholders in the stock market and investors are urged to refrain entirely from publishing or promoting such false information and rumors.

The statement further emphasized the need for vigilance against individuals who engage in the dissemination of baseless rumors or false information with malicious intent. It warned that appropriate legal action will be taken promptly against those found involved in spreading gossip or false information, within the ambit of the law.

This proactive stance by the BSEC underscores the importance of maintaining the integrity and stability of the stock market by combating the spread of misinformation and rumors, especially in the age of social media.
