BTRC: No Directive to Shut Down Internet Services
Desk Report: The Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) has clarified that no directive has been issued to suspend mobile networks or fixed broadband internet services in Khagrachari and Rangamati districts.
In a press release issued on Saturday, September 21, BTRC provided this information following recent disturbances.
The statement noted that on Thursday, September 19, clashes occurred in Dighinala, Khagrachari district. During the conflict, around 4 PM, an incident of arson caused damage to the optical fiber of NTNT operator Summit Communications Limited and BTCL, leading to network disruptions for 16 towers of mobile operator Robi, which has about 150 towers in the area.
Due to the ongoing tense situation, immediate repairs to these towers were not possible.
As of Friday, September 20, broadband internet services remain operational in Khagrachari and Rangamati, despite some areas experiencing damaged connections due to cable disruptions and ongoing electricity issues.
However, ISP operators are actively working to restore affected networks and provide internet access through generators, gradually reestablishing broadband services in those areas.
The release further stated that the BTRC has not issued any instructions to shut down mobile networks or fixed broadband internet services.
The commission expressed regret for the temporary inconveniences faced by customers.
