Khairul Alam: Justice Obaidul Hassan, who currently serves as a judge in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, will be sworn in as the 24th Chief Justice of the country.
The oath-taking ceremony will take place at 11 AM at the Bangabhaban, the official residence of the President.
Justice Obaidul Hassan was appointed as the Chief Justice of Bangladesh through a presidential order, as per Article 95(1) of the Constitution of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh.
According to the order issued by President M. Sahabuddin, he will assume office as the Chief Justice from the date of taking the oath.
During this period, the outgoing Chief Justice, Hasan Foyez Siddique, will be abroad from September 11th to September 18th.
During his absence, the senior-most judge of the Appellate Division, Justice Obaidul Hassan, will serve as the acting Chief Justice.
Justice Hasan Foyez Siddique retired on September 25th. His judicial career concluded on August 31st, as he was on leave during his last days in office.
Justice Obaidul Hassan took office as the Chief Justice on December 31, 2021, and served in this capacity for a full 20 months. He turned 67 years old on September 25th, which is why, in accordance with the constitution, he retired on that day.
Justice Obaidul Hassan was born on January 11, 1959, in Mohangonj, Netrokona District, into a Muslim family. His father, Dr. M. Akhlakul Hussain Ahmed, was one of the key figures in the Liberation War of Bangladesh.
