 Cyclone Danna Strengthens, Coastal Areas Face Risk of Tidal Flooding

Khairul Alam, Dhaka: The powerful cyclone Danna is intensifying, raising concerns about tidal flooding along the coastal areas of Bangladesh and nearby islands due to its advancing front.

The Meteorological Department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by strong winds, is expected to affect the northern Bay of Bengal and adjacent coastal regions.

According to the agency, the coastal districts of Satkhira, Khulna, Bagerhat, Barguna, Barisal, Jhalokati, Pirojpur, Patuakhali, Bhola, Lakshmipur, Noakhali, Feni, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar, along with their nearby islands and char areas, could experience tidal flooding 2-3 feet higher than normal levels.

Meteorologists predict that cyclone Danna will cross the coasts of northern Odisha and West Bengal in India around midnight on October 24.

In a special weather bulletin, it was noted that at 12 PM on October 24, the cyclone was located 570 km southwest of Chattogram port, 535 km southwest of Cox’s Bazar port, and 435 km southwest of both Mongla and Payra ports. It is expected to continue moving in a north-northwest direction.

The cyclone’s center has maximum sustained winds of 90 km/h within a 64 km radius, with gusts potentially reaching 110 km/h. Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla, and Payra ports have been advised to display local warning signal number 3.
