Muyabia Labony ; DHAKA – Following two days of scattered rain and thunderstorms across the country, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has issued a fresh warning for severe Kalbaishakhi (Nor’wester) storms.

The alert, released on Tuesday (April 28), indicates that violent storms could sweep across all eight divisions of the country within the next 48 hours.

48-Hour Storm Watch

According to the meteorological department’s special bulletin, the period of intense storm activity is expected to begin from 11:00 AM on Tuesday and persist for at least two days.

The alert covers the following divisions:

  • Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Chittagong

  • Rajshahi, Rangpur, and Sylhet

  • Khulna and Barisal

Wind Speeds and Potential Hazards

Meteorologists warn that gusty or squally winds from the west or north-west could reach speeds between 60 and 80 km/h. The storms are likely to be accompanied by:

  • Heavy lightning and thunder.

  • Severe wind gusts capable of causing damage to temporary structures and crops.

  • Potential hailstorms in isolated areas.

The BMD has advised the public to remain cautious during this period, particularly those residing in areas prone to lightning strikes or those involved in the ongoing Boro paddy harvest in the haor regions.

Current Synoptic Situation

The extension of a low-pressure area currently stretches from West Bengal to the North Bay of Bengal, creating the atmospheric instability required for these pre-monsoon storms.

While day and night temperatures are expected to remain relatively unchanged, the intensity of rain and wind is likely to increase significantly in the northern and central parts of the country.
