Dengue Fever Death Toll Rises as 321 More Hospitalized

Health Desk: The dengueo utbreak in the country continues to escalate, with an additional 321 patients hospitalized in the last 24 hours.

This brings the total number of dengue cases this year to 27,705.

Unfortunately, two more deaths have been reported, raising the total fatalities to 143 for the year.

According to a regular report from the Health Emergency Operation Center and Control Room of the Directorate General of Health Services on Friday (September 27), of the newly hospitalized patients, 166 are from the two city corporations in Dhaka. Additionally, 65 are from the Dhaka division, 7 from Barishal, 19 from Chattogram, 15 from Khulna, 22 from Mymensingh, and 28 from Rajshahi.

Since January 1 to September 27, a total of 27,705 people have been admitted to hospitals due to dengue, with 62.9% being men and 37.1% women. Among the 143 fatalities, 52.4% were women and 47.6% men.

Dengue cases typically surge during the monsoon season, and since June 2023, the situation has worsened significantly.

Last year, 321,179 patients were treated for dengue, with 110,008 cases in Dhaka and 211,171 cases outside the capital. In total, 318,749 individuals recovered from the disease last year, but 1,705 succumbed to it, marking the highest annual death toll in the country’s history.

In previous years, the dengue outbreak has varied significantly, with 101,354 cases in 2019 and nearly 300 deaths among patients and healthcare workers.

During the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, dengue cases were relatively low, but 28,429 cases were reported in 2021, resulting in 105 deaths. In 2022, 62,382 people were hospitalized with dengue, leading to 281 deaths.
