Dbarata24 Health Desk — Bangladesh is witnessing an alarming uptick in mosquito-borne dengue cases, with the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) reporting five fatalities within just the first four days of August. The recent deaths have pushed the nationwide casualty count to 59 since January 1.

According to the latest bulletin released by the DGHS on Tuesday, while no new deaths were recorded in the preceding 24 hours, 530 fresh patients were admitted to hospitals across the country. This brings the total number of hospital admissions this year to 17,214, of whom 15,834 have successfully recovered and been discharged.

Regional Breakdown & Hospitalizations

The daily surge highlights a significant strain on healthcare infrastructure, both within the capital and across various divisions:

  • Dhaka City Corporations: In the 24 hours up to 8:00 AM on Monday, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) hospitals recorded 39 new admissions, while Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) facilities registered 82 patients. Hospitals elsewhere in the Dhaka division treated another 93 cases.

  • Divisional Trends: Regional reports indicate a widespread threat across the country. Khulna registered the highest outside Dhaka with 81 new patients, followed closely by Barishal (73) and Chattogram (73). Mymensingh admitted 38 patients, Rajshahi 26, Rangpur 22, and Sylhet 3.

A Growing Monthly Trend

The sudden spike in early August follows a concerning trajectory set over the mid-year months. Dengue-related mortality showed a sharp increase from 13 deaths in June to 36 deaths in July, signaling a severe escalation as the monsoon season peaks—a prime breeding period for Aedes mosquitoes.

Historical Context & Escalating Risk

Since the DGHS formally began tracking dengue hospitalizations and deaths in the year 2000, Bangladesh has faced recurring waves of outbreaks.

Year Total Hospitalizations Total Deaths
2023 (Worst Recorded) 321,179 1,705
2024 ~102,000 400+
Current Year (To Date) 17,214 59

While current figures remain below the unprecedented catastrophe of 2023—which marked the highest historic toll in both infections and fatalities—health experts warn that the sharp increase during late summer requires immediate preventive interventions and public awareness to prevent another national health crisis.
