Traders Report: The price of 4 eggs (One Hali) in the capital has come down by Tk 5 recently. It was reduced to Tk 15 per dozen. Traders claim that egg prices are falling due to increased supply.
However, the National Directorate of Consumer Rights Protection believes that the prices have come down as a result of raids in various shops and stores.
Now farm chicken eggs are being sold at Tk 155 to 165 per dozen. Two days ago it had gone up to 180 taka. A piece of egg, which used to cost up to Tk 15, cost Tk 13 75 paisa in the neighborhood shop. Each Hali of egg is being sold for Tk 55.
The National Directorate of Consumer Protection is carrying out a drive to control the market due to the sudden increase in the price of eggs. The consumer department claims that the continuous raid will further reduce the cost of eggs.
The egg market has been in turmoil for the past few weeks. To buy an egg, a consumer has to spend up to Tk 15, which is a record price for an egg. Marginal farmers say that they get Tk 2 less per piece of egg as compared to the market. Because the sale of eggs is completely controlled by traders syndicate.
The price of eggs is controlled through various poultry dealer association, association of the country. They are not allowed to sell eggs more than the fixed price. Meanwhile, if the price does not come down, eggs will be imported from abroad if needed, said the commerce minister.
After the import threat to rein in the prices, the prices started falling in the wholesale market. The benefit of which is now being felt in the retail market as well.
The sudden increase in the price of eggs in the country is not a new thing. In the beginning of this year, in January-February, the price of eggs increased by about Tk 30 per dozen in a few weeks. Earlier, the prices of eggs were in August last year.
