Daulatkhan Upazila Health Complex in Bhola has been almost useless for a long time. The reason is lack of staff and poor building condition. This government hospital is the only hope for about 250,000 people. But every day, hundreds of patients do not get treatment because there are not enough doctors.
According to government rules, this health complex should have 31 doctors, including specialists. But in reality, less than half are working. The biggest shortage is in surgery, gynecology, child care, and medicine. Because of this, many patients are sent to Bhola Sadar Hospital or Barisal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital. This costs villagers more time and more money.
Local people said there are often no doctors in the emergency section. Pregnant women with labor pain get only first aid and then are sent to far hospitals. On the way, their condition sometimes becomes worse. Accident patients also face the same problem.
Besides the doctor crisis, there is also a lack of machines. The X-ray, ultrasound, and lab machines are broken and useless for a long time. So patients must go to private centers and pay high fees for tests.
One officer of the health complex, who did not want to share his name, said: “Our biggest problem is shortage of staff. Many positions are empty. We are waiting for new doctors for a long time.”
Local representatives said villagers have many hopes from this health complex. But because of the shortage of doctors and machines, it cannot play its proper role. People of Daulatkhan said they are angry because they are not getting proper service from the government hospital. For poor villagers, this health complex was their only hope.
Local people requested the health authority to take quick steps. They want enough doctors, new machines, and repair of broken ones. They believe if Daulatkhan Health Complex works fully, rural people will get affordable and quality treatment.
