Five More Children Die of Measles Symptoms in Bangladesh as Nationwide Surge Continues

Dbarta24 Health Desk –  The deadly surge of measles and measles-like viral infections continues to grip Bangladesh, claiming the lives of five more children exhibiting measles symptoms within a 24-hour period.
 
According to the latest health surveillance data, three of the latest fatalities were recorded in the Dhaka Division alone.

Escalating Infection Rates and Fatalities

Over the same 24-hour reporting period ending Monday morning, health authorities confirmed 163 new laboratory-verified measles cases across the country.
 
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) has been issuing regular epidemiological bulletins tracking the outbreak since official reporting commenced on March 15.

The nation’s overall burden has reached critical levels, with 98 laboratory-confirmed measles deaths recorded to date. However, the mortality figure is significantly higher when accounting for suspected cases, with 780 children having lost their lives after exhibiting severe measles symptoms.

Division-Wise Fatality Breakdown

The epicenter of the outbreak remains the Dhaka Division, which has suffered the highest casualties, recording 341 deaths linked to measles symptoms. Sylhet Division follows as the second most severely impacted region.

The cumulative breakdown of symptom-related child deaths across all eight divisions includes:

  • Dhaka: 341 deaths
  • Sylhet: 124 deaths
  • Rajshahi: 91 deaths
  • Mymensingh: 72 deaths
  • Chattogram: 61 deaths
  • Barishal: 46 deaths
  • Khulna: 32 deaths
  • Rangpur: 13 deaths

Hospitalization Pressure and Case Tally

Hospitals across the country are facing a steady influx of young patients showing viral symptoms. In the last 24 hours, 992 individuals with measles-like symptoms presented at various health facilities nationwide, leading to 940 new hospital admissions.
 
Dhaka Division recorded the highest single-day hospital admissions at 333, followed by Chattogram with 252, Sylhet with 132, and Barishal with 94 admissions.

Cumulative hospital data reveals that 119,322 patients showing measles symptoms have been admitted to medical centers across Bangladesh since the start of the tracking period. Among them, 115,139 patients have recovered and been discharged following treatment.

Nationwide epidemiological records now stand at 137,312 suspected measles cases, with 17,278 officially confirmed through laboratory testing as public health officials work to contain the transmission.
