Muyabia Labony ; Dhaka – The measles situation in Bangladesh has taken a grim turn, with 11 more children dying from measles and related symptoms in the last 24 hours.
The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) confirmed these figures in a press release issued on Saturday (April 25).
According to the DGHS control room, all 11 fatalities reported in the last day were cases of “suspected measles.” During this same 24-hour period, 1,287 new cases were identified, of which 229 were laboratory-confirmed and 1,058 were suspected cases.
The statistics since March 15 paint a concerning picture of the outbreak. To date, the total number of suspected measles patients across the country has reached 30,607, with 4,460 confirmed cases. A total of 20,475 patients have required hospitalization, of which 17,081 have been discharged.
Since the beginning of this surge on March 15, the total death toll has risen to 251 children. This includes 209 suspected and 42 confirmed measles deaths.
Geographically, Dhaka Division remains the hardest-hit region in terms of both infection rates and fatalities, followed by Rajshahi, Chattogram, Khulna, Barishal, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Sylhet.
