Measles Outbreak: 6 More Children Die in 24 Hours, Total Toll Hits 481

Labonnya Liza ; Dhaka- The measles crisis in Bangladesh continues to worsen as six more children died of the disease and its related symptoms in the 24 hours leading up to Wednesday morning.

According to the latest report from the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), three of the deceased were laboratory-confirmed measles patients, while the remaining three exhibited severe symptoms of the virus.

Epidemic Update: With these latest casualties, the total death toll from measles and suspected measles symptoms across the country has risen to 481 since March 15. Out of these, 80 deaths have been officially confirmed as measles through medical testing.

Regional Breakdown of Recent Deaths

Of the six fatalities reported in the last 24 hours, the distribution across divisions is as follows:

  • Dhaka: 2 deaths

  • Barishal: 2 deaths

  • Sylhet: 1 death

  • Khulna: 1 death

Surge in Daily Infections and Admissions

The country also witnessed a substantial rise in suspected infections within the same 24-hour window. A total of 1,270 suspected measles cases were identified nationwide.

The crisis has put an immense strain on healthcare facilities, with 1,145 new patients admitted to hospitals across the country, while 1,030 patients were discharged after treatment. During this period, 138 cases were fully confirmed as measles.

Health authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, advising parents to seek immediate medical intervention at local facilities or dedicated centers like the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital if symptoms appear.
