NAICO corruption case: Hearing on Khaleda Zia’s petition begins in High Court

Special Desk: Hearing has begun on BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’s petition challenging the legality of framing of charges in the NAICO corruption case. The hearing started on Wednesday (August 9) in the High Court bench.

On March 19, Judge Sheikh Hafizur Rahman of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-9 set up in building number 2 of Keraniganj Central Jail, ordered the trial to begin against eight accused, including BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

At this point, the judge wants to know from the defendants whether they are guilty or innocent. The lawyers for the other accused and Khaleda Zia claim their innocence and seek justice. Then the court ordered the framing of charges against him.

According to the case report, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) registered a case against Khaleda Zia on December 9, 2007, at Tejgaon police station. After investigation, on May 5, 2008, a charge sheet was filed in the court against 11 people including Khaleda Zia.

Khaleda Zia, convicted in two other cases filed by the ACC, has been detained at the Old Central Jail, Nazimuddin Road, since February 8, 2018.

Begum Khaleda was later shifted to BSMMU Hospital for treatment. While undergoing treatment there, he was released by the executive order of the government. At present, he is undergoing treatment at his home.
