One More Child Dies of Measles Symptoms, Total Death Toll Rises to 657

Desk Report, Dhaka – A nine-month-old infant has passed away after contracting measles. The father is stunned by grief, and the mother is in tears. The tragic loss occurred on Tuesday at the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital and Institute.

According to the daily measles report released by the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) today, Tuesday, one child died from measles-like symptoms within the last 24 hours (from 8:00 AM Monday to 8:00 AM Tuesday).

The fatality was reported in Khulna. During this same 24-hour period, 1,142 new patients were recorded with measles and measles-like symptoms across the country.

Outbreak Data Since March 15

DGHS data reveals the severe scale of the ongoing outbreak since it began gaining traction on March 15:

  • Total Casualties: A total of 657 children have died so far. This includes 93 children whose deaths were directly confirmed after testing positive for measles and 564 children who passed away with measles-like symptoms.

  • Total Infections: Symptomatic cases have reached 87,929 children, while confirmed measles infections stand at 10,523.

  • Hospitalizations & Recoveries: Out of the thousands affected, 72,405 children required hospital admission due to measles symptoms. Among them, 68,782 children have fully recovered and returned home.

Daily Situation Update

The outbreak continues to place pressure on healthcare facilities. In the last 24 hours alone, 136 new cases of measles were officially confirmed, 938 children were newly admitted to hospitals, and 904 patients were discharged after recovery.
