Muhammad Tarek ; Dhaka – Law enforcement agencies across Bangladesh have been placed on high alert following intelligence reports of potential terror attacks targeting key state installations, including the National Parliament (Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban), law enforcement facilities, religious sites, and public gathering spots.
According to a confidential letter issued by the Police Headquarters, various banned militant groups are regrouping to launch attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) and sharp weapons.
The risk is considered particularly sensitive due to the recent escape of several death-row militants from various prisons across the country following the political transition on August 5.
Key Threats and Intelligence Findings:
-
Target Areas: National Parliament, police checkposts, religious shrines, entertainment centers, and high-traffic areas like Shahbagh.
-
Escaped Militants: Reports indicate that over 1,500 active radicals are currently at large, including 79 militants who escaped during the prison breaks of late 2024.
-
Foreign Influence: Intelligence agencies have detected the presence of agents from foreign extremist groups, including Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), attempting to establish a foothold in the country.
-
Recent Activity: Investigations into recent explosions in Keraniganj and Shariatpur suggest that militants are actively manufacturing bombs and recruiting members through online platforms, including the promotion of Islamic State (IS) ideologies.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and the Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit have assured the public that comprehensive security plans are in place.
“There is no reason to panic; we are working to face these challenges,” said Munshi Shahabuddin, Joint Police Commissioner of the CTTC.

The current threat involves a mix of local “lone wolf” actors and coordinated efforts from escaped convicts, making surveillance and public cooperation essential.
