Saad Sajid ; Dhaka- The intense heat of the Bengali month of Jyaishtha continues to scorch Bangladesh, with 34 districts, including the capital city of Dhaka, currently reeling under a sweeping heatwave.
On Sunday, the country’s highest temperature peaked at 37.5 Degree Celsius, while Dhaka recorded a maximum temperature of 36.4Degree Celsius .
Compounding the misery, most parts of the country remain virtually dry and rainless. The highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded in Cox’s Bazar’s Teknaf, measuring a modest 30 mm.
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has forecast rain across all eight divisions today; however, meteorologists warn that it is unlikely to bring down the overall temperatures.
According to the official weather forecast, light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning flashes are likely to occur at a few places over the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions, and at one or two places over Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barisal divisions.
Additionally, moderately heavy falls are expected in isolated areas of the Chittagong and Sylhet divisions. Elsewhere in the country, the weather will remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy skies. Both day and night temperatures across the country are expected to remain nearly unchanged.
BMD meteorologist Dr. Abul Kalam Mallik stated that while the heatwave is currently sweeping over 34 districts and keeping conditions uncomfortably hot today, its overall coverage might shrink slightly.
He further added that scattered rain is occurring in various parts of the country and rainfall activity is expected to increase from June 3. The southwest monsoon is also anticipated to advance over the Teknaf coast later this week, which will likely trigger more widespread rainfall.
Meanwhile, the temperature in the capital city of Dhaka was recorded at 28.6 Degree Celsius at 6:00 AM this morning.
