Bangladesh Weather: Mild to Moderate Heatwave Sweeps 38 Districts, Relief Expected Soon

Muyabia Labony ; Dhaka – A mild to moderate heatwave is currently sweeping across 38 districts in Bangladesh, including the capital city of Dhaka, severely disrupting daily life due to extreme heat.

However, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) has provided some hope, stating that the intense heat may subside in several areas over the next 24 hours.

According to the weather bulletin issued for the 24 hours starting from 9:00 AM on Friday, a mild to moderate heatwave is affecting the districts of Rangpur, Dinajpur, Nilphamari, Dhaka, Tangail, Manikganj, Faridpur, Madaripur, Gopalganj, Chandpur, Noakhali, Feni, Rangamati, and Lakshmipur, as well as all districts under the Rajshahi, Khulna, and Barisal divisions.

While the heatwave is expected to ease in parts of the country and both day and night temperatures may drop slightly nationwide, high levels of humidity will likely keep atmospheric discomfort elevated.

Rainfall Predictions

On the brighter side, the Met Office forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning flashes in several areas across the Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Mymensingh, Khulna, Barisal, Chittagong, and Sylhet divisions. Some regions may also experience moderately heavy rainfall.

Synoptic Situation & Monsoon Arrival

A trough of low pressure lies over West Bengal, extending up to the North Bay. Meanwhile, weather experts expect the Southwest Monsoon to advance as far as the Cox’s Bazar coast within the next 48 hours, which signals the official arrival of the rainy season.

Over the past 24 hours, the country’s highest temperature was recorded at 38.8 Degree Celsius in Dinajpur and Jessore. During the same period, the maximum rainfall was recorded in Chuadanga at 44 mm.
