Shakib Al Hasan Announces Retirement from Test and T20 Cricket

Khairul Alam: Bangladesh’s star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has announced his retirement from Test and T20 cricket during a press conference in Kanpur, India, on Thursday, September 26.

The announcement comes just one day before his participation in the second Test against India.

At 37, Shakib revealed that he will not retire from Test cricket immediately; he plans to play in the upcoming home series against South Africa in October, which he has declared will be his last.

Shakib played his final T20 match on June 24 against Afghanistan, where he was dismissed for a duck and did not take any wickets.

He stated that his decision was made after discussions with the board president, selectors, and team management.

He mentioned, “I have spoken with Faruk bhai (BCB President) and the selectors.

If I have the opportunity to play, then the Mirpur Test will be my last.” Shakib confirmed he is available for the South Africa series but acknowledged that the final decision rests with the board.

Although he is retiring from T20 and Test formats, Shakib will continue to play One Day Internationals, with no immediate plans for retirement from that format.

He has left the door open for a potential return to T20 cricket if needed for the next T20 World Cup, provided he maintains his fitness and the management expresses interest.

Addressing concerns regarding his safety amid ongoing legal issues, Shakib emphasized the importance of feeling secure while playing, both domestically and internationally.

He expressed confidence that the board is attentive to his situation and will guide him in making a decision that allows for a dignified farewell from Test cricket.
