Khairul Alam: In April 2017, Bangladesh entered the era of three captains across three formats with Shakib Al Hasan in charge of T20Is. After six years, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has returned to the theory of one captain in all three formats at the hands of Shakib.
The experienced all-rounder was officially handed over the ODI captaincy today (Friday). Currently, he will lead the team in the upcoming Asia Cup and India World Cup.
Najmul Hasan Papon confirmed this information in a press conference at his residence.
Of course, in between these two tournaments, Shakib will lead Bangladesh in the New Zealand series at home. Apart from this, if Shakib wants, BCB is willing to captain him in all three formats for a long time.
Papon said, ‘I think it is difficult for him (Shakib) to captain three editions simultaneously. It should be rectified by talking to them.
In which version he wants to do, which one he wants to keep, if he wants one or two versions, somehow, then if he wants to do all three versions, no problem. Therefore, after knowing their point of view, the board will take a decision.
BCB announced the name of the new captain only a week after Tamim stepped down. At this time, there were rumors about many names, but in the end, the board trusted Shakib’s experience.
Shakib was Mashrafe bin Mortaza’s vice-captain during the 2009 tour of the West Indies. Mashrafe was injured in the first Test and Shakib was made the caretaker captain.
That was Neta Shakib’s first assignment. After proving himself there, BCB relieved him and officially led him in the next series.
He led the team for almost two years in the first phase. This all-rounder was removed from the captaincy after the Zimbabwe tour in 2011. After 6 years, in 2017, when Mashrafe Bin Mortuza retired from T20, Shakib returned to the captaincy in the T20 format.
In the same year, he also got the captaincy for the second time from Mushfiqur Rahim. But in 2019, the ICC banned him for one year and lost the captaincy for the second time.
Then, in June 2022, Shakib returned to lead the team again in Test cricket. A month later, he also got the T20 captaincy. And this time he got the ODI captaincy. Bangladesh will once again play in all three formats under the leadership of Shakib after almost an era.
