Bangladesh Calls for Global Leadership in Deep-Sea Research for Climate Vulnerable Nations

UN Correspondent: In the pursuit of deep-sea exploration, an appeal has been made to grant dominance in scientific research to countries vulnerable to climate change, by Dr. A.K. Abdul Momen, the Foreign Minister of Bangladesh.

On Tuesday, September 19, at a high-level meeting on deep-sea scientific research held at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Dr. Momen extended this call to the global community.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the meeting was jointly organized by Bangladesh, Argentina, and the International Seabed Authority (ISA).

The main keynote address was delivered by the Prime Minister of Cook Islands, Mark Brown. Dr. Momen was joined by Secretary-General of the International Seabed Authority, Michael W. Lodge, and Tonga’s Foreign Minister, Fekita ‘Utoikamanu.

Through deep-sea scientific research, the aim is to accelerate the achievement of United Nations development goals for international communities.

Dr. Momen emphasized that deep-sea biodiversity and its sustainable management can play a pivotal role in attaining these objectives. To ensure this, conducting essential research programs in deep-sea exploration is imperative.

The Foreign Minister stated that the deep sea plays a critical role in controlling our climate, making scientific research in this realm of utmost importance.

Therefore, effective scientific research management in the deep sea is crucial for the sustainable management of our climate.
