Staff Correspondent, Dhaka – A fresh writ petition has been filed with the High Court seeking a stay order on the decision to form an ad-hoc committee for the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).
Following the dismissal of a previous petition filed by a Supreme Court lawyer, this new legal challenge has been mounted by 12 former directors, including former BCB presidents Aminul Islam Bulbul and Faruque Ahmed.
Sources confirmed that the petition was officially submitted last Thursday.
The petitioners have also requested the court to issue a rule nisi, asking the authorities to explain why the dissolution of the elected BCB committee and the subsequent formation of the ad-hoc committee should not be declared beyond legal authority.
Earlier on April 7, the National Sports Council (NSC) dissolved the BCB board of directors led by Aminul Islam and constituted an 11-member ad-hoc committee. Iconic cricketer Tamim Iqbal was appointed as the president of this newly formed ad-hoc body.
The committee also features veteran former cricketers Minhajul Abedin and Athar Ali Khan. Other notable members include Rashna Imam (wife of MP Bobby Hajjaj), Mirza Yasir Abbas (son of the Prime Minister’s Political Advisor Mirza Abbas), Sayeed Ibrahim Ahmad (son of Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed), and Israfil Khosru (son of Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud).
Subsequently, on April 30, seven Supreme Court lawyers, including Advocate Md. Golam Kibria, challenged the validity of the NSC’s decision by filing a writ petition.
However, after detailed hearings, the High Court bench dismissed that petition on May 11, paving the way for this second legal challenge by the disgruntled board directors.
