HC Cancels Stay Order on Dr. Yunus’ Sentence in Labor Law Violation Case
Court Report: The High Court has revoked the stay order on the six-month sentence against Dr. Yunus in the case of labor law violation and punishment appeal tribunal. As a result, Dr. Yunus’ six-month sentence will remain in effect.
The ruling was announced on Monday by Justice Md. Nazrul Islam Talukdar and Justice Kazi Ebadat Hossain of the High Court bench, issuing a proper declaration.
Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun appeared for Dr. Yunus in court, while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan represented the Ministry of Labor and Employment.
On February 5, the High Court had ordered Dr. Yunus to inform the Labor Appellate Tribunal before leaving the country if he wished to travel abroad, in the case filed for violating labor laws. Simultaneously, the High Court stayed Dr. Yunus’ six-month sentence in the case of labor law violation. However, the stay order was later canceled by the court.
Earlier on February 4, an application was filed in the High Court to stay Dr. Yunus’ six-month sentence in this case. Additionally, a plea was submitted to the court to prevent Dr. Yunus from leaving the country.
In a related development, Dr. Yunus had challenged the verdict of the labor law violation case along with four others before the Labor Appellate Tribunal. The same day, the Labor Appellate Tribunal stayed the sentence given by the Labor Court.
Earlier, Dr. Yunus had taken bail before the Labor Appellate Tribunal. He also filed an appeal challenging the six-month sentence in the labor law violation case, presenting 25 arguments in his defense.
The ruling was issued by Judge Sheikh Marina Sultan after the signature of a full-fledged verdict of 84 pages.
