Major Downturn in Stock Market, Lowest Index in Three Years

Business Report: The country’s stock market has experienced a significant downturn, with share prices and unit prices of most companies declining daily. Consequently, key stock market indices have fallen to their lowest levels in nearly three years.

In the past few days, including the first trading day of the week on Monday, there has been a major downturn in the stock market.

Most companies, especially those listed on the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), have suffered from the downturn. As a result, the main stock market index of the DSE has dropped to its lowest level in nearly three years.

The downturn in the index has been accompanied by a decrease in trading activity. Trading volume at the DSE has decreased by Tk 500 crore. Similarly, many companies listed on the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) have also seen a decline in their share prices.

Consequently, all major stock market indices have experienced significant declines. This has resulted in seven consecutive trading days of downturn in the stock market. Out of the last 23 trading days, 20 have seen investors facing losses.

Previously, during the past week, the stock market capitalization had fallen by over Tk 49,000 crore in just five trading days. The market capitalization had dropped by Tk 70,000 crore over the course of four consecutive weeks of decline.

The situation worsened when trading began on Monday, with the majority of companies witnessing a significant drop in share prices. As a result, the main index of the DSE plummeted by 23 points.

The share prices of most companies continued to decline, leading to a further 78-point decrease in the main index of the DSE by midday. Although the downturn in some companies’ share prices was less severe, all major indices experienced significant declines, resulting in the conclusion of the trading day with losses.
