Foreign Desk; Delhi- In a significant shift in diplomatic strategy, the Indian government has decided to appoint former Union Minister and BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi as the next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. This marks the first time in many years that India has chosen a seasoned politician over a career diplomat for this critical post in Dhaka.
A Veteran Profile
The 75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is a prominent figure in Indian politics. Hailing from West Bengal, he previously served as the Union Minister for Railways and Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare under the Congress-led UPA government while representing the Trinamool Congress (TMC). In 2021, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Diplomatic Transition
Trivedi’s appointment is currently awaiting formal approval from the Bangladesh government. Upon confirmation, he will succeed Pranay Verma, a professional diplomat who has already been assigned as India’s Ambassador to the European Union in Brussels.
Context of the Appointment
The diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Dhaka faced a period of strain following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government on August 5, 2024, and the subsequent tenure of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus.
However, relations have begun to stabilize and normalize following the formation of a new government in Bangladesh led by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman.
Analysts suggest that the Narendra Modi government’s decision to send a high-profile politician like Trivedi—who has deep roots in West Bengal and understands regional nuances—is a strategic move to further strengthen bilateral ties and navigate the evolving political landscape.
