Health Desk – The ongoing measles outbreak in Bangladesh continues to take a devastating toll on children, with five more fatalities and 969 new infections recorded across the country in the last 24 hours.

The Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) revealed the alarming numbers in its latest daily situation report released on Sunday.

According to the health directorate, the latest casualties occurred between Saturday morning and Sunday morning.

Among the deceased, one child was officially diagnosed with measles, while the remaining four exhibited severe symptoms of the highly contagious viral disease.

Geographically, the virus claimed three lives in the capital city of Dhaka, while the remaining two deaths were reported in the Sylhet and Barishal divisions.

Of the 969 newly infected children nationwide, 90 have been confirmed positive for measles through clinical testing, while 879 others are being treated for strong symptoms associated with the disease.

Rising Caseloads and Rising Toll

The crisis has severely strained pediatric healthcare facilities, resulting in massive admission surges over the last 24 hours:

  • New Admissions: 849 children were hospitalized nationwide within a single day due to complications from the disease.

  • Recoveries: On a positive note, 843 children were discharged from various hospitals during the same period after successfully recovering.

Epidemiological Context and Cumulative Data

Data compiled by health authorities highlights a severe public health challenge that has been escalating rapidly over the past four months. Since March 15, the country has recorded a staggering total of 124,980 infections.

Within this cohort, 13,500 cases have been laboratory-confirmed as measles, while 111,480 patients displayed severe symptoms.

The cumulative death toll has now reached 758 since mid-March. This includes 94 children who died after being confirmed positive for measles and 664 who succumbed to related symptoms.

On the recovery front, a total of 90,605 children have been successfully treated and discharged from hospitals since the beginning of the reporting period.

Health Outlook

Public health experts are urging parents to ensure their children receive timely vaccinations and to seek immediate medical attention if symptoms like high fever, cough, runny nose, and distinct skin rashes appear.

With hundreds of new cases arriving at hospitals daily, health officials are focusing on expanding isolation wings and stabilizing the influx of pediatric patients.
