Desk Report: US President Donald Trump has cancelled his planned visit to India. According to a report by the New York Times on Saturday, Trump will not attend this year’s Quad Summit hosted by India. The decision comes amid growing tensions in his relationship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and disputes over trade issues.
So far, neither the White House nor India’s Ministry of External Affairs has made an official statement about Trump’s cancellation.
Although Trump and Modi showed signs of a close relationship back in 2019, things have cooled in recent years. In June, the two leaders had a 35-minute phone call where Trump claimed he had “resolved” the India-Pakistan border conflict and even hinted that Modi should nominate him for the Nobel Peace Prize.
Modi firmly responded that the conflict was resolved through direct talks between India and Pakistan, without US involvement. Since then, relations have become more strained.
Recently, Trump’s administration imposed an additional 25% tariff on India for buying oil from Russia. Experts believe this is not only about the Russia issue but also a way to put extra pressure on India. As a result, trade ties between Delhi and Washington have grown even more complicated.
Diplomatic sources say that issues ranging from the Nobel Prize comments to trade pressure have pushed the once-close Modi-Trump relationship to the breaking point.
