Former Minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain Passes Away
Special Correspondent ; Dhaka: Veteran Awami League leader, member of the party’s Presidium, and former minister Engineer Mosharraf Hossain has passed away. He was 83.
The veteran freedom fighter breathed his last at around 10:15 AM on Wednesday while undergoing treatment at Square Hospital in the capital. He had been suffering from various age-related complications for several days.
His son, Sabedur Rahman Sumu, confirmed the news of his death. He stated that a funeral prayer (Janaza) will be held on Thursday after Asr prayers at the Mahajanhata Fazlur Rahman School and College ground in Mirsarai, Chattogram.
While a Janaza is also planned in Dhaka, the time and location are yet to be finalized.
A Distinguished Career
A prominent figure in Bangladesh’s political history, Engineer Mosharraf Hossain served as the Minister for Housing and Public Works, as well as the Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism, during different tenures of the Awami League government.
He was elected Member of Parliament (MP) from the Chattogram-1 (Mirsarai) constituency six times (1973, 1986, 1996, 2008, 2014, and 2018). Notably, he was one of the framers of the 1972 Constitution of Bangladesh.
Later Years and Legacy
Born on January 12, 1943, in Mirsarai, he graduated in Mining Engineering from Lahore in 1966. His political journey began early; he served as the President of the East Pakistan Student Union in 1964 and was actively involved in the Six-Point Movement in Lahore.
During the Great Liberation War of 1971, he served as a Sub-Sector Commander in Chattogram, leading guerrilla operations against the occupation forces.
In recognition of his immense contribution to the nation, he was honored with the Independence Award (Swadhinata Padak) in 2019.
Following the fall of the Awami League government in July 2024, he was arrested in October 2024. Due to serious illness, he was transferred from Chittagong Central Jail to a hospital in August 2025 and was later released on bail on August 14, 2025.
